FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – August 14, 2026 – Unified Gas, Inc., doing business as UniGas, today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) establishing a preliminary framework to evaluate natural gas delivery infrastructure and dual-fuel conversion of GPL-owned and operated heavy fuel oil (HFO)-fired power plants.
Executed on August 13, 2026, the MoU creates a period for detailed technical, commercial and financial evaluation before the parties decide whether to negotiate definitive agreements.
"This MoU is an important step toward putting Guyana's natural gas to practical use while preserving GPL's reliability, safety and governance requirements." – James Hulse, Chief Executive Officer, UniGas
A disciplined feasibility process
UniGas will prepare an engineering, technical and financial feasibility study covering engine conversions, gas supply, HFO displacement, site integration, CNG unloading and pressure reduction, gas metering, capital and operating costs, safety systems, permitting, scheduling and projected savings to GPL.
Subject to definitive agreements, the scope includes dual-fuel systems targeting approximately 80% displacement of HFO consumption, together with the full lifecycle of safe reliable CNG delivery.
"CNG delivery can provide a practical bridge between Guyana's emerging gas supply and existing generation assets," said James Hulse, Chief Executive Officer of UniGas. "This project is expected to reduce total operating costs by 50% per engine and reduce emissions by 25–95%."
GPL retains full approval and public-interest safeguards
GPL will provide reasonable access to relevant facilities and operating information, subject to its safety, security and approval requirements, and retains the right to approve designs, equipment, performance guarantees, tie-ins, operating procedures and interfaces before implementation.
Privately capitalized, with no final commitment at this stage
The MoU is not a final gas-supply, transportation or construction contract. No funds are required by GPL under the MoU to capitalize or construct the proposed infrastructure. During the MoU term UniGas and GPL will coordinate data collection, site review and engineering analysis. A definitive agreement is the next step to kick off the engineering assessment, all parties are working towards that milestone.
