Public Awareness and Safety
Building Public Awareness and a Culture of Safety Around Natural Gas
UniGas is committed to fostering public understanding and safe engagement with natural gas and its infrastructure through a comprehensive Public Awareness and Safety Program. As pipeline development progresses, our priority is ensuring that every stakeholder—from local residents to industry partners—has the knowledge and tools to interact safely with natural gas systems.
Our public outreach campaign is designed to educate and empower communities through targeted efforts across all affected regions. The program includes:
Community Engagement
In-person awareness sessions at churches, public offices, and community centers to explain the benefits of natural gas, how pipelines operate, and the precautions necessary to ensure safety.
Educational Outreach
Safety shares and age-appropriate lessons in elementary schools to instill early awareness of pipeline safety, the smell of gas (odorant recognition), and safe behavior around energy infrastructure.
Direct Communications
Distribution of printed safety materials and mailers to homes and businesses located near pipeline corridors, detailing what to do in case of a gas leak, how to recognize gas by smell, and how to report issues.
Training and Partnerships
Collaborative training programs with first responders, utility workers, and industry associations to prepare for emergency response, incident prevention, and ongoing operational safety.
Customer and End-User Education
Tailored safety guidance for commercial and industrial gas users, focusing on system operation, leak prevention, and reporting procedures.
"Call Before You Dig" Campaign
A dedicated outreach effort to discourage unauthorized excavation near pipelines, emphasizing safe digging practices and promoting the national "Call Before You Dig" message.
Through these integrated efforts, UniGas is laying the groundwork for a safety-first culture that protects lives, supports safe operations, and strengthens trust in the growing use of natural gas as a clean and reliable energy source for Guyana.
